This BBC radio program features B. R. Ambedkar, distinguished lawyer and leader of the Untouchables who was opposed to Gandhi's policy relating to a separate electorate of the Untouchables. Ambedkar recounts memories of meeting Gandhi in 1929 and after the signing of the Poona Pact in jail. As he saw Gandhi in the capacity of an opponent, he feels that he saw more of the real man than his devotees. Ambedkar considers Gandhi "an episode" rather than "an epoch-maker" and believes he deceived the people and was two-faced over caste. He analyzes the status of the Untouchables (Harijan) and inconsistencies in Gandhi's apparent championship of them. Ambedkar feels that political independence would have come without Gandhi, but that the Transfer of Power was premature. He also examines motives be...

During the less than 13 years of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s leadership of the modern American Civil Rights Movement, from December, 1955 until April 4, 1968, African Americans achieved more genuine progress toward racial equality in America than the previous 350 years had produced. Dr. King is widely regarded as America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history. Drawing inspiration from both his Christian faith and the peaceful teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King led a nonviolent movement in the late 1950’s and ‘60s to achieve legal equality for African-Americans in the United States. While others were advocating for freedom by “any means necessary,” including violence, Martin Luther King, Jr. used the power of words and acts of ...

Mahatma Gandhi: Pilgrim of Peace His pacifist philosophy brought one of the world's great powers to its knees. He proved that violence is not the only road to change. Mahatma Gandhi's life was a study in contrast and paradox. He saw himself as doing God's work, yet recognized only personal conscience as the highest authority. He was a charismatic leader of millions who confounded intellectuals.Biography profiles the small man who took a great nation on his shoulders and changed the world. Trace his rise to power and fearless campaign of truth, non-violence and non-cooperation with injustice that defeated the British Empire. Biographers offer insight into his surprising personal life, while historians explore his remarkable accomplishments. Hear from his grandson, Arun Gandhi, and, in a rar...
Så nära ligger sömnen
under alla täcken sval
svept och gömd i filtar
plast, nylon, cellofan
Min mun vid termometern
fuskar Mig febersvag
& det känns som om
Jag glömt någonting kvar?
Jag tappar mina kläder
Jag tappar värmen
grad för grad
Nu skakar Mina händer
värre varje dag
som cesium & syre
brinner Jag alldeles klart
& det känns som om
Jag glömt någonting kvar?
Hon är vaken
Jag vet att hon är vaken
Jag är vaken
Hon vet att Jag är vaken
Vi är vakna
Visst syns det att Vi
Så nära känner lukten
nu kan Jag slappna av
& utanför på trappan
får frosten Dig att tappa tag
Det har hunnit bli oktober
nu fryser gräset & går av
& Jag hatar allt
som böjs & går av
Tänk om Jag har fel
